Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and one of East Africa’s most scenic volcanic peaks. Located within Arusha National Park, Mount Meru rises dramatically above the surrounding savannahs and forests, creating a spectacular backdrop visible from much of northern Tanzania and even from nearby Mount Kilimanjaro on clear mornings.
Often overshadowed by Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru is considered one of Africa’s most rewarding trekking mountains. The climb combines lush rainforest, wildlife encounters, alpine moorlands, volcanic landscapes, and breathtaking crater views into a compact but unforgettable adventure. Because the mountain lies inside a national park, trekkers frequently encounter giraffes, buffalo, monkeys, antelope, and countless bird species during the lower stages of the ascent.
The summit, Socialist Peak, stands at 4,566 meters and rewards climbers with panoramic views of Kilimanjaro, the Great Rift Valley, and Meru’s dramatic horseshoe-shaped crater formed by ancient volcanic eruptions. Mount Meru is also widely used as an acclimatization climb before attempting Kilimanjaro.
Dense montane rainforest surrounds the lower slopes of Mount Meru, alive with waterfalls, giant fig trees, and abundant wildlife.
The rainforest gradually opens into heath and moorland landscapes filled with giant heather, wildflowers, and panoramic views.
A dramatic volcanic saddle connects the main mountain to Little Meru, offering stunning sunrise and crater scenery.
The final summit ridge follows Meru’s crater edge with steep cliffs and breathtaking views stretching across northern Tanzania.
From montane forests to the jagged crater rim, Mount Meru offers an exhilarating trek and a sanctuary for diverse alpine wildlife.
Mount Meru offers one of Africa’s most diverse trekking experiences — combining wildlife safaris, rainforest hikes, volcanic landscapes, and high-altitude climbing into a single journey.
The mountain is quieter than Kilimanjaro, giving trekkers a more remote and intimate wilderness experience. Sunrise from Socialist Peak is unforgettable, with Mount Kilimanjaro floating above the clouds in the distance while the sun illuminates Meru’s crater cliffs.

Winter on Meru. Temperatures drop at Miriakamba Huts, but the air is dry and the forest is vibrant.
Peak season. Crisp, clear views of the Ash Cone. Wildlife sightings in Arusha National Park are at their best.
Afternoon showers are common, but mornings are typically clear. The mountain is lush and green.
