Mount Kilimanjaro trekking via the Machame Route is one of the most scenic and successful ways to reach the summit of Africa’s highest mountain. Popularly known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame is admired for its breathtaking landscapes, excellent acclimatization profile, and rewarding summit success rate. Unlike the Marangu Route, Machame is a camping route, offering trekkers a more immersive wilderness experience while passing through some of Kilimanjaro’s most dramatic ecological zones.
Beginning on the southwestern side of the mountain, the Machame Route leads climbers through dense rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and glacier-covered summit terrain. The route is especially famous for highlights such as the Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, and the scenic Southern Circuit that provides spectacular panoramic views from multiple sides of Kilimanjaro. Its longer itinerary and “climb high, sleep low” approach allow better altitude adaptation, making it one of the preferred routes for trekkers seeking both beauty and higher summit success.
The adventure reaches its unforgettable climax during the midnight ascent from Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), where trekkers arrive at the Roof of Africa in time to witness a magnificent sunrise above the clouds. With experienced mountain guides, supportive porters, nourishing meals, quality camping equipment, and full logistical support from Kilimanjaro Raven Company, the 7-day Machame Route offers an extraordinary combination of adventure, scenery, endurance, and personal achievement on the legendary Mount Kilimanjaro

After breakfast, drive to Machame Gate for registration and park formalities before beginning your trek through Kilimanjaro’s lush rainforest zone. The trail winds beneath towering trees draped with moss while tropical birds and monkeys may occasionally appear along the route.
The climb is steady with several steep sections as you gradually gain altitude through dense forest scenery. Arrive at Machame Camp in the late afternoon where you can relax and enjoy dinner surrounded by rainforest landscapes.
— Accommodation: CampingElevation: 3,000m to 3,840m | Distance: 5 km | Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
After breakfast, leave the rainforest behind and continue into the heath and moorland zone where giant heathers and volcanic rock formations dominate the scenery. The trail becomes steeper and more rugged while panoramic views begin opening across the Shira Plateau.
As you gain elevation, magnificent views of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro’s western slopes emerge. Arrive at Shira Camp in the afternoon and enjoy dinner beneath clear mountain skies.
— Accommodation: CampingElevation: 3,840m to 4,630m to 3,950m | Distance: 10 km | Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Today is an important acclimatization day following the “climb high, sleep low” principle. After breakfast, trek steadily toward Lava Tower, a dramatic volcanic rock formation standing at 4,630m above sea level.
After lunch near Lava Tower, descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley surrounded by giant senecio plants and towering cliffs. Arrive at Barranco Camp with breathtaking views of the Barranco Wall and southern glaciers of Kibo Peak.
— Accommodation: CampingElevation: 3,950m to 3,995m | Distance: 6 km | Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Begin the day by climbing the famous Barranco Wall, a thrilling non-technical scramble that rewards trekkers with spectacular panoramic views across the Southern Circuit. Although steep, the climb is safe and enjoyable with assistance from your crew.
After reaching the top, continue trekking through ridges and valleys toward Karanga Camp. This shorter trekking day allows valuable time for acclimatization and rest before moving to higher altitude. Arrive at camp in time for lunch and relaxation.
— Accommodation: CampingElevation: 3,995m to 4,673m | Distance: 4 km | Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
After breakfast, continue ascending toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before your summit attempt. The landscape becomes increasingly barren as you enter the alpine desert zone beneath the summit glaciers.
Arrive at Barafu Camp in the afternoon with time to organize summit gear, rest, and receive a detailed summit briefing from your guides. After an early dinner, try to sleep before beginning the midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak.
— Accommodation: CampingElevation: 4,673m to 5,895m to 3,100m | Distance: 17 km | Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
Your summit attempt begins shortly after midnight as you climb slowly toward Stella Point on the crater rim. This is the most physically and mentally demanding stage of the trek, requiring determination and endurance.
From Stella Point, continue to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. Reaching the summit at sunrise is an unforgettable reward. Descend carefully back to Barafu Camp for a rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp. Dinner and overnight at camp.
— Accommodation: CampingElevation: 3,100m to 1,640m | Distance: 10 km | Hiking Time: 4–6 hours

Upon arrival at Mweka Gate, receive your summit certificate before meeting the transfer team for the drive back to Moshi. Enjoy a hot shower, celebration dinner, and well-earned rest after conquering the Roof of Africa.
