Mount Meru trekking is one of Tanzania’s most rewarding mountain adventures, offering spectacular scenery, rich wildlife encounters, and excellent acclimatization before climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Standing at 4,566 meters, Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest mountain and is located within Arusha National Park. The mountain features dramatic volcanic landscapes, dense montane forests, alpine desert terrain, and breathtaking crater views that create an unforgettable trekking experience.
Unlike many mountain treks, Mount Meru begins with a walking safari through the lower slopes of the national park where trekkers may encounter giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, monkeys, antelopes, and a wide variety of birdlife. The route then ascends through lush rainforest, giant heather moorlands, rocky ridges, and volcanic crater terrain toward Socialist Peak, the summit of Mount Meru. The trek offers incredible panoramic views of Mount Kilimanjaro, especially during sunrise from the summit ridge.
The highlight of the adventure comes during the early morning summit ascent to Socialist Peak (4,566m), where trekkers witness a spectacular sunrise above the clouds and across the plains of northern Tanzania. With experienced mountain guides, armed park rangers, nourishing meals, comfortable mountain huts, and full logistical support from Kilimanjaro Raven Company, the 3-day Mount Meru trek offers the perfect combination of adventure, wildlife, scenery, and altitude preparation.
